Correct, you need to examine the string pointed by the chSysHalt() parameter. It is possible to "hook" the function and print the string somewhere but the debugger is usually the easiest and safest way (after a crash your "print" function could fail as well).
how to force chSysHalt() to output ...

Re: how to handle operating system exceptions?
Do I understand correctly that it is possible to determine the cause of SysHalt only using the hardware debugger?

how to handle operating system exceptions?
Hi.
what i mean:
- I use i2cMasterTransmitTimeout() - if communication with the device is lost, the system "freezes" (m, line 83),
- if there is not enough stack size for the thread - the system "freezes",
- trying to send an event - for some reason the system "freezes" (m, line 172).

PCD8544 and STM32VLDiscovery
I needed to connect the LCD of nokia 3310 without uGFX.
On the Internet I found a project for Cocoox and adapted it for chibios.
In archive -- working sample project for stm32vldiscovery with PCD8544 driver.

Can I use 3.3v character LCD like this one for this example?
yes, of course.
if there is the datasheet for your display - verify the initialization procedure, it may be slightly different.

Re: HD44780 not initialized
I figured out what the problem was.
In my case did not work function palClearPort() and palSetPort().
I replaced them on palSetPad()/palClearPad() for single bit, and pal_lld_setport()/pal_lld_clearport() for groups of bits.
working example in the attachment.

Re: HD44780 not initialized
Hi All!
Maybe someone can share a working example without using µGFX?
Thanks.

HD44780 not initialized
Hi!
I am a beginner in ChibiOS/RT.
first I tried to use by the LCD screen stm32vldistsovery.
I took a working sample project and moved him out of his driver in a test project for stm32vldistsovery.
and here I was unlucky - this code does not work, LСD is not initialized.
maybe I made a mistake ...
