It's popular in some parts of the world; Particularly Japan. Renesas support in the west is a bit... Weird. They aren't very hobbyist-friendly. I have the RX62N promo board and I'm interested in this port. It's a really powerful microcontroller. I also have a few of their other boards and haven't spent much time with them since their tools haven't been very cross-platform friendly. I've used the KPIT Cummins GCC fork, but as I understand it an official version also exists. About a year ago I was able to cross-compile another RTOS for my board, on Linux, but was hoping to run ChibiOS/RT on it some day.
