Status and Future Directions.

Postby xorfy88 » Tue May 13, 2025 1:33 pm

Hello everyone,
I've been following the ChibiOS project for quite some time and I'm particularly interested in its application to RISC-V based platforms. I've noticed sporadic mentions of RISC-V support across the forum, but haven't seen a dedicated, comprehensive discussion.
Currently, I'm evaluating different RTOS options for a new project utilizing a SiFive Unmatched board. ChibiOS seems like a strong contender due to its modularity, small footprint, and rich set of peripherals drivers. However, I'm uncertain about the current state of RISC-V support within the ChibiOS ecosystem.
Specifically, I'm interested in:
* **Official RISC-V port status:** Is there an officially supported RISC-V port within the mainline ChibiOS codebase? If so, which architectures/SoCs are supported?
* **Community contributions:** Are there any active community contributions or forks focused on improving RISC-V support? Where can I find more information on these efforts?
* **Toolchain compatibility:** What are the recommended toolchains for developing ChibiOS applications on RISC-V? Are there any known issues or limitations with specific toolchains (e.g., GCC, LLVM)?
* **Peripheral driver availability:** How comprehensive is the peripheral driver support for common RISC-V based SoCs? Are drivers available for peripherals like UART, SPI, I2C, and Ethernet?
* **Future development plans:** Are there any planned improvements or enhancements to the RISC-V port in upcoming ChibiOS releases?
I would appreciate any insights, experiences, or resources that the community can share regarding ChibiOS on RISC-V. My goal is to assess the feasibility of using ChibiOS for my project and contribute back to the community if possible.
Thanks in advance for your help!.

Hi,

Currently there is a RISC-V community port, you may ask for information on our Discord server if interested.

We have plans to make this port official but not immediate.

BTW registering from any kind of VPN makes you "observed" because forum spam issues, you risked automatic cancellation, I had to manually stop that.
