At work we wanted it to be employees-only. So we set up our own server (synapse + element) in our internal network and disabled any kind of federation. So you have to use our VPN to be able to connect to it. This kind of setup would obviously be the wrong choice for an open source project.

But Matrix is very flexible and works well in multiple kinds of setup structures. For example the government of France uses Matrix with federation over several internal servers as basis for their secure chat platform. A good example for a successful setup with federation over public servers would be the FOSDEM 2021 online conference. You could seamlessly take part in the discussions from any matrix server connected to the public federation at matrix.org and it was also bridged to IRC.

The "Spaces" feature in Matrix and the client Element is out in Beta. Looks like slack/discord. The feature is in beta, and is accessible thru the web client at develop.element.io .

Here's an invite link to the space: https://matrix.to/#/!GiLpWdKZeSURJazAmQ:matrix.org

Below is a comparison between Element (Matrix) and Slack:

Slack (from their homepage)

There is an existing ChibiOS (#chibios on freenode) community on IRC: viewtopic.php?t=534 . Matrix is very open to bridging different systems as well (Slack discontinued their support for IRC and XMPP a few years ago), and would help to coalesce other ChibiOS online communities as well.

Hi,

There is no point in using slack or others with 3..4 people.

Better keep threads on the forum and IM for quick messages, PM me for telegram group invitation.

Suggest Discord. Pretty simple to setup. Very popular amongst developers and several people already use it because of gamming and/other communities. We used for several years now on .NET nanoFramework. See [here](https://discordapp.com/invite/gCyBu8T). ;)

Hi,

So far we are using a single Telegram channel, it is sufficient for a limited number of persons and it is working very well, lots of problems are solved quickly.

Since the number is increasing we will probably switch to a more structured environment later on and we may go back to the suggested solutions. The idea is to go from single channel to topic-based channels.

BTW, PM me your account if you wish to join, the only requirement is having contributed somehow to the project (bugs, code, docs, suggestions, general forum activity).

Let's keep that on hold, I need to poll if all people on Telegram want to migrate.

Might as well just use Matrix directly. Gitter is now a non self hostable subset of the matrix network it seems.

Any reason to not use Gitter as client? if so, which client should be used?

Don't see any reason not to if you're staying with the 'gitter sandbox'.

Gitter has a mobile app, but I've only used gitter.im . Not sure how actively developed it is. The latest version i see on the play store is from September 2020.

Element (the native matrix mobile and web app) is being constantly updated .. and there are more than one matrix clients (and server implementations ..) available.
