STM32F427 FMC vs FSMC

Post by Rick Burnett »

Hello!

I've been porting over a project from the F407 processor to the F427 and hadn't noticed before that there is a new system. Before diving too deep into this, I wanted to know, is this something already supported in a new ChibiOS release? Is it in a stable or development version?

Figured it is always good to ask before I start editing a lot of code! :)

As background, I am trying to control an LCD just like the example in the Wiki. I've successfully make that code work on the F407 on the discovery board. I am also using an older version of ChibiOS before the F427 came out so I figured there might be a newer version that has more support for what I am using, but I didn't want to change it till I knew for sure.

Thanks!
Rick

For those playing the home game, I updated to 2.6.6 and switched to the F429 discovery board (yes, at some point I need to create my own board files, didn't want to go too deep yet). After I figured out all the FSMC stuff just needed to be renamed to FMC (all the symbols are all the same with that change in their name) I got the code to compile and run.

Since the problems were the same, I went back and checked all 144 pins on the CPU and I think I fixed 2 bridges (man pins that size are small) and I put a new LCD panel on. Now it works perfect.

Hi,

Thanks for testing with FMC, barthess will be interested in this. Probably it would be a good idea to provide also the renamed version.

No problem! I've not setup the DMA stuff yet as I want to move the code over to that mechanism, I've done that before on the F407 chip so not too entirely worried about getting it to work. I write my own graphics libraries because I want more control, so I've been porting the same code around for a bit. :)

In the end, your example code basically made this very easy. The rule of "check your connections" lives happily in this project like so many before it :) Haha.

As I know the only difference between FMC and FSMC is support of dynamic RAM in first one.

I believe the FMC can also use a 32-bit data bus as well, whereas the FSMC only goes up to 16 (at least, that's what the documentation says).
