STM34F4 Discovery Board Multiple Serial Ports Problem

Post by erwinkendo »

Greetings, I am using various available serial protocols in stm32f4 discovery board. I am using the USART driver and Serial Driver.

When I use SD4 in pins PINA1 and PINA0 with USART3 in pins PINB10 and PINB11, everything works fine, but when I add Serial Port 2 (with Serial Driver or USART driver) in pins PINA2 and PINA3, the code stops working, it prints by SD4 the first batch of data, but then stops or doesn't star at all. Without using usart2, the code works well.

Here is the initialization part for the pins:

Code: Select all

  sdStart(&SD4, NULL);
  palSetPadMode(GPIOA, 1, PAL_MODE_ALTERNATE(8));
  palSetPadMode(GPIOA, 0, PAL_MODE_ALTERNATE(8));

  uartStart(&UARTD3,&UARTpcfggps);
  palSetPadMode(GPIOB, 10, PAL_MODE_ALTERNATE(7));
  palSetPadMode(GPIOB, 11, PAL_MODE_ALTERNATE(7));

  uartStart(&UARTD2,&UARTpcfgimu);
  palSetPadMode(GPIOA, 2, PAL_MODE_ALTERNATE(7));
  palSetPadMode(GPIOA, 3, PAL_MODE_ALTERNATE(7));

Only initializating usart2, the code stops working. I used both usarts some days ago so I know it works, but it seems the three serial devices at the same time have some problems.

Are debug options enabled? an assertion could be triggered.

I enabled all the debugging options in this page: http://www.chibios.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=chibios:guides:debug_guide
In compilation time, no errors occurred.

I will try and use st-link and gdb to debugg. Do you recommend me using eclipse for this?

Yes, Eclipse is recommended so you can use the debug plugin.

Note that debug options do not trigger errors at compile time, assertions block the execution at runtime when an anomaly is detected, after the halt it is possible to inspect the state from the debugger.

Anyway, verify if you have conflicting DMA channels, are you using other peripherals other than USARTs? if so it is possible some channels are in conflict, you can verify this in mcuconf.h.

Giovanny, as always thank you.

A little explanation about the DMA channels please, what part of the configuration shows this?

This is my mcuconf.h file:

Those STM32_DMA_STREAM_ID(), note that USART3 can conflict with SPI2 using the default settings, USART2 can conflict with I2C1.

Thank you again.

But trying to fix this in the mcuconf.h file, an error occurred:

Code: Select all

../../os/hal/platforms/STM32/uart_lld.h:239:2: error: #error "invalid DMA stream associated to USART2 TX"

Does this mean I have to change the DMA stream definition in both mcuconf and uart_lld.h files? seems weird.

Ok, found the posible DMA ids in the hal_lld.h file, but when changing STM32_I2C1_TX_DMA_MSK from (STM32_DMA_STREAM_ID_MSK(1, 6)) to STM32_DMA_STREAM_ID_MSK(1, 7)), the system stops working (I tried this in the discovery F4 demo).

Could this be a DMA related issue? the debugging hasn't been successful ChibiOS plugin is not working for me.

The possible DMA IDs are found in the reference manual, section 8.3.3 "Channel Selection".

If you use I2C1 make sure to use version 2.4.1, version 2.4.0 had a bug on the alternate DMA setting for I2C1.

Without debug capability on your side or a test case that I can run there is not much more I can do. You should try hard to create a working debug environment if you want to create complex applications.

An interesting article for those who try to use more than 2 dma transfers at the same time:
