Your expecting release on Jan 12, any idea how long until STM32 support will be added after that?

Thanks!

Support for the STM32 is part of the ChibiOS project so it will likely ready from start. Additional components will be installed by using the Eclipse updater from the ChibiOS update site.

So this release in Jan 12 will be not an evolution of the ChibiStudio preview 3, right? So I think I'll skip the previw 3 and wait for this new development :-)

Hi,

It is not an evolution of ChibiStudio but something new. My idea is to add to this new environment also the bits present in the current ChibiStudio and have the advantages of both.

Err, I think it will be moved to next week... a problem with a proprietary compiler supplier... it is sad because the tool has been ready since December :(

I can give more info anyway, ChibiOS will be included for SPC5xx devices but you will be able to update it from ChibiOS update site and get components for other platforms too (working on STM32F4 already, then F3 and F0).

There will be meta-components too, for example, if you include in your application the component "ChibiOS/RT for STM32f4xx" it will incorporate also the dependent components Kernel, HAL, STM32F4xx Board, etc. The RTOS will be ready and integrated in your application with 3 clicks: Add Component, click on component, OK.

Other things like the C++ wrapper, the shell, chprintf, the test suite will be embedded in components as well and can be simply added to the application. No need to mess with makefiles anymore (but the result is always a Makefile application that you can compile without Eclipse).

Users will be able to add their own components too, the process is very simple and the SDK is included. All you have to do is to create an "Update Site" where other users will be able to get the component and update it when needed. This potentially will make partecipating to the SPC5/ChibiOS ecosystem much easier because you can just start offering components and just announce the URL.

You can already see part of the components on http://www.chibios.org/eclipse and get an idea, you cannot install them yet because a dependency not present in standard Eclipse.

Right now I'm more interested in the STM32F1 and F4.

Any chances those components and the base IDE could be released earlier for GCC? Then the troublesome proprietary compiler could be released later as an update?

F4 will be supported first, then the others, the required components will be made available through the ChibiOS update site (including the compiler which will be our beloved GCC, no proprietary $#%@).

Another bit of info.

SPC5Studio also allows to embed tools into Eclipse plugins, for example I will encapsulate the ARM compiler and OpenOCD into plugins and you will be able to install/update them from within Eclipse, no need to set environment variables, everything is done automatically.
Supporting another architecture just requires installing the required tools as plugins. Compilers installed traditionally (not plugins) will work as well, like a normal Eclipse environment.

Any updates on this fancy new IDE? Is this week still likely or are there more unexpected roadblocks in the way?

No news, it is ready but still blocked because a contract for a proprietary compiler. In the meanwhile we are already working on the new features for the 2nd release:
- Enhanced configuration tool
- MicroExplorer-like graphical pins configuration tool.

The ChibiOS components are almost ready, you can already see most of them on the ChibiOS repository: https://chibios.svn.sourceforge.net/svn ... ents_trunk

I'll ask permission for an external beta test but I wouldn't hold my breath.
