Understanding Make by using ChibiOS as an Example

I recently decided it was time for me to better understand how GNU Make is used to build a project with more than say 3 or 4 files.
I used the STM32F4Discovery demo's Makefile as a reference.

I feel this isn't really the type of project that was envisioned to be placed here, but thought it might be helpful/interesting to some.
