That's indeed very interesting! I start to wonder if they actually make profit from these things... Until now I thought that they don't really earn anything by them since the price is that low, but somehow they produce by far too many different ones within the last few months... what's happening?

Probably they discovered that micro variants with a discovery board get a sales boost. Someone told me that they do not sell those boards at loss, most components are ST even linear parts.
The problem is on this side, right now there are 3 new boards waiting support

They're trying hard to compete w/ TI's Launchpad program. The new Discovery boards look a lot better than the old one...
