STM32Fxxx I2S DAC driver status

Post by iwan »

Dear Giovanni,

i would need for a project a I2S driver solution to feed an external DAC by I2S, preferred up to 192kHz/24 Bit. Nearly all examples from ST are only for 16bit, 48kHz. I know there are problems with the F10x hardware for I2S, what limits I2S there to 96kHz. The F3xx controllers got new periphery hardware, compared to the F1/F2/F4 controllers.

In ChibiOS, can someone stream I2S audio data with 24bit / 192kHz to an external DAC? From the Datasheet, the STM32F4xx should be able to do this half duplex, and the F3xx should even do this full duplex. To my knowledge, the F2/F4 can not do that as I2S master, but should be able to do it as I2S slave. I am not sure about the F3xx. Can you confirm a setup with STM32Fxxx and ChibiOS, what is known to work streaming 24/192?
Is there an ChibiOS example audio player, using the I2S DAC driver?

Hi,

The I2S driver is experimental and has been used only in very specific use cases, known limits:
1) RX and TX (full duplex) is not supported yet.
2) It is not available for STM32F3xx devices yet. The SPI peripheral is different and it requires some changes.
