[POLL] How important is ChibiStudio for ChibiOS

Post by Giovanni »

Hello everybody,

It is time for me to plan for the future of this project, my question is about ChibiStudio.

Please also feel free to comment about what you would like to see in the toolchain.

The answer is "It depends".

If ChibiStudio is just a generic name for any completely integrated IDE & compiler: very.

If ChibiStudio is the specific implementation of the Eclipse and GCC: not very.

If ChibiStudio 7 was based on Code::Blocks or Em::Blocks or any other compiler it wouldn't matter to me. What matters is that I can go from nothing to compiled code as easily as possible.

The distinction is not clear to me.

It is meant to be a free IDE pre-configured for ChibiOS, the plan is to make specific developments in this direction (investing actual $$ on it for extensions) if there is interest.

Giovanni,

Please continue support of ChibiStudio! I want you to know I've very much appreciated the work you've done on it. Thank-you! Without it I'd be lost. It's my GO TO for ChibiOS/RT work.

Great being able to have a single IDE for everything (Java, C++, ChibiOS, etc...). Eclipse is amazing, but dauntingly complex for me. Your turnkey approach with ChibiStudio is something I very much needed.

I hope you continue supporting and developing it.

What I really miss is an official repository for Linux... Programming under a Linux distro is thousandsfold better than under Windows, especially with common toolchains and tools originated on Unix-like environments! ;)

I use a "ChibiStudio" for Linux on Ubuntu, there are no problems in building it. The problem is with OpenOCD, there are arcane USB settings to be performed and those can be different on the various distros. It is not something I could support.

ChibiStudio is important, but right now not sufficiently reliable and specific to consider it indispensable.
However, I would never give the module ChibiOS/RT debug view up.

Strength is in numbers. I know there are very many Linux fans are here, but Windows has bigger spread, at least for now. So the initial studio better to be for Windows. Just mine $.02

For me ChibiStudio (in this case rather a common name for the Eclipse plugins) is very important. I am using Ubuntu, so the packaging is not really important as long as I can get the ChibiOS Debug View working in Eclipse. With the debug options in ChibiOS it is a very strong combo and helped a lot in the past.

Hello

It is very nice to just download it and try out the examples without fiddling around to get a different IDE to work.

Could you possibly document how you build ChibiStudio ? Like a small step by step guide how to set up and install all components. Maybe you can also reduce it to one version of the GCC ARM Embedded toolchain.
