msp430x port

Post by pete_jan »

I wanted to use the msp430 port, and it seems quite broken. no ioregister and the HAL_LLD does not work well for the msp430x5438 I'm using.

Attached is a bit of a hack at the moment, but works on the board I build with an msp430x5438 on it.

I will clean it up if you would like to include it in your main demo/port source tree.

Hi,

The MSP430 port didn't receive much feedback and its development is stagnant, just maintained but not actively improved.

Could you specify the main differences with the current port? ideally it would be better to create an unified MSP430 port/hal instead of two distinct ports.
See the ARMCMx port for example, it support all cores from several vendors.

Hi,

Thanks for the feed back, yes I agree it would be better to create only one port, although testing all the variants could be an issue.

Attached is a patch against ChibiOS 2.3.2 unstable, it uses mspgcc-4.5.2 (the uniarch version). I have tested it with a serial board I have. I have the HAL work to do yet.

Thanks,

This is interesting, I tried mspgcc4 a while ago but it didn't work so the port is still tested using mspgcc3.

TI have a deal today; $25 inc international shipping for an MSP430 wireless watch with LCD and an RF usb key:

Could be a fun application for the msp430x port.. I've ordered one!

Hi,

I didn't merge it yet because I am unable to do tests on MSP430x, please let me know how it goes :-)

Is it possible to run ChibiOS on Launchpad http://e2e.ti.com/group/msp430launchpad/w/default.aspx ?
Now it ships with MSP430G2553 - 16kb flash + 512 RAM
According to this report http://chibios.sourceforge.net/reports/ ... 1611-8.txt OS use only 333 Bytes of RAM.

It is possible but you also need RAM for your own application. Note that 333bytes are measured with all the kernel subsystems enabled, you can greatly reduce that amount by disabling unused options in chconf.h (allocators, mutexes, etc).

i think it will be very usefull port, because of the price of this MCU and Launchpad (4,3$ with Fedex delivery) - it will be good adv for chibi

If there is enough interest I will put a refresh of the MSP430 port in queue, there are several things that could be done:
- Merge the port for the MSP430X architecture.
- Test it using the newest mspgcc.
- Enhance the HAL support.

The point is that I really like the MSP430 core architecture however I haven't received much feedback about this port, this is why it is on hold.
