The GCC 4.7.1 topic

Post by Giovanni »

Hi,

I just ran some tests using YAGARTO 4.7.1, I am experiencing worse results compared to 4.6.3. It is not like some tests are worse and others are same or better, all tests are consistently worse by a small margin.

Strange, it is possible I am doing something wrong but it is unlikely. More tests would be welcome. I recommend staying with 4.6.3 until this matter is better understood.

Hello,

For your information :

GNU Tools for ARM Embedded Processors 4.6 update 2

4.6 2012q2 (update 2) released at https://launchpad.net/gcc-arm-embedded/ ... -q2-update

This release is based on 2012q1 release with several defect fixes and Cortex-M0+ support.

Highly recommend to download this release instead of previous 4.6 series.

Best Regards,

Not yet, it is slower than 4.6.3 and I would not hold my breath for fixes in 4.7.x, if things are going to be better it will happen in 4.8.x. I suggest to stay with 4.6.x in the meanwhile since 4.7.x brings nothing really new for embedded.

It is possible that the integrators of the "GNU Tools for ARM Embedded Processors" (could they just give it a name?) will apply their own fixes on standard GCC when they will release a 4.7.x.

Release GCC ARM Embedded 4.7

The first 4.7 released is ready at https://launchpad.net/gcc-arm-embedded/ ... 2-q4-major

In addition to GCC 4.7 upgrading, this release also includes
* more code size optimizations
* newlib-nano: tailored libc based on newlib for code size (Beta)
* Mac OS host
* Debugger enhancement

Highly recommend to upgrade. 4.7 is backward compatible to 4.6 in command line. So it is almost risk-free for 4.6 users to embrace these new enhancement.

I agree with gfortaine. The GNU ARM toolchain works very very well and from my point of view, it's highly recommended to use this one.
I had several problems myself with other toolchains like summon-arm-toolchain together with ChibiOS/RT and plenty of other users had other problems with other toolchains as well. It really looks like the GNU ARM toolchian from the launchpad seems to be the best choice to pick!

Well, you can get precompiled binaries which work very well directly from launchpad. Sadly, they only work for linux so for Mac OSX you have to compile it yourself. But I know two guys which use that one under Mac OSX and they are quite happy with it :)

nope, the whole point of what I was quoting is that this is no longer the case, there are mac os x binaries and they work :lol:
